To complete Narmada Parikrama is considered as sacred and a meritorious act that a pilgrim can undertake. But the whopping 3500 km circumambulation of the river cannot be completed by all. It requires physical and mental preparedness. And when people do complete they get a sense of victory. But imagine a woman in her sixties who has undergone knee replacement and still willing to do this circumambulation requires not only physical preparedness but will power beyond imagination. That’s what Sulabha Chandrakant Kulkarni did as she completed the Naramada Parikrama.
The 63-year-old Government employee was suffering from knee pain from 2009, but with household chores and office, she was not mentally prepared for a knee replacement surgery as this would affect both. But by the time she retired in 2015, her knee pain started to worsen and she decided to go for knee replacement surgery. Doctors had already told her it was high time she took a decision. Finally she underwent knee replacement surgery at SaiShree Hospital Aundh, Pune. A team of doctors under the leadership of well known Robotic Joint replacement surgeon Dr. Neeraj Adkar operated on her, and her bilateral knee replacement was done successfully.
Sulabha Chandrakant Kulkarni said that, I was at ease during the entire treatment and surgery at SaiShree Hospital because of the incredibly friendly staff. All these factors provided support to her during and after the course of her surgery and helped her get on with her life again.
With a positive attitude Sulabha decided to do things she wanted and within six months of replacement she travelled to Rajasthan, Girnar, and Chaar Dhaam. She also completed the Narmada Parikrama by car. However, taking inspiration from other travellers, she decided to complete Narmada Parikrama for a second time on foot. It was a herculean task as this would test her physically as well as mentally to the core. On 2nd November 2019 she set off from Pune and on 5th November she had started the Narmada Parikrama. She started walking in the morning with an aim to cross 15-30kms by every evening. She completed the entire parikrama on foot by 19th May 2020.
Being a senior citizen, or atleast by physical age, she had come for vaccination to the hospital where she narrated her experience to Dr Neeraj Adkar, Chief Robotic Joint Replacement Surgeon at SaiShree Hospital. The doctors and staff were in awe for the humongous achievement of this patient.
Dr Neeraj Adkar added that, with newer techniques , advances in surgical procedures, the precision and accuracy has also been improving considerably resulting in decreased hospital stay of the patient and better mobility in lesser time. Sulabha Chandrakant Kulkarni is an inspiration to all who feel life is different after a major surgery . She has shown the way for many. After all ‘Life is Mobility and Mobility is Life’
