This Beginner's Guide page explains the most salient information that every new player should learn first. When you're brand new to New World, it can be daunting to figure out which systems you need to learn and understand. Luckily, we have everything you need to get started on your journey in Aeternum.
New World is all about exploring a desolate, cursed island for the rare resource known as Azoth. You join one of three factions who each vie for control over the island's various regions and settlements, all while trying to stave off the mysterious and diabolical Corruption which is seemingly sweeping over the island and turning its human residents into mindless creatures.
You will need to choose a data center and server to play on before creating your character. The data center represents a physical location to which you'll connect, while the server is a specific world within that data center that hosts its own unique set of players, player-based organizations, and a unique world state which is specific to that server. Characters on one server cannot cross over and play with characters from another server. Some players have the ability to transfer characters between servers on the same data center.
Before starting your journey in Aeternum, you need to create your very own character. There are no races or preset classes, but you do get to change your appearance and choose a name. The following parameters are customizable during character creation.
New World is an MMORPG with real-time action combat. Instead of using the Tab key to automatically target an opponent while your character auto-attacks them to death, the basic combat function is built around an aiming reticle which allows you to aim and manually unleash your own light and heavy attacks in real time.
Further, your armor weight determines how quickly you can dodge roll and which additional effects your attacks will have. Armor weight can be customized by mixing and matching several different kinds of armor, but armor generally breaks down into Heavy, Medium, and Light armor styles which each contribute a different amount of weight to your total armor weight.
As you fill up your inventory with items and resources, you'll want to attend to the Encumbrance Level. This is the maximum carry weight you can store in your inventory at once, and once it's reached a certain threshold you can no longer run, dodge, jump, or use abilities. Beyond that point, if you continue adding weight, you can no longer move at all until you offload the excess carry weight.
Drinking Encumbrance Potions that you can craft at the Arcane Repository will allow you to increase your maximum carry weight for a period of time dependent on the tier of the potion. The higher the tier of the potion, the longer the additional Encumbrance effect is received.
In New World, you'll level up from 1 to 60 over the course of time as you explore the world of Aeternum and gain XP. There are many activities to choose from in New World, but some offer far better XP than others. At a cursory level, you should be grinding as many Town Projects and Faction Missions as you possibly can. The best part is that you can carry up to 12 Town Projects and 6 Faction Missions at one time per settlement, meaning that you can grab a ton of these and complete them in one circuit, then refill each of them at once. They also refresh on a very short timer, which, in practice, translates to these repeatable quests refreshing just as quickly as you complete them!
You can earn even more XP per action by selecting the XP Gain perk in your Territory Standings menu. You also earn a small amount of Rested XP when logging out inside of a Settlement, which accelerates your XP gain up to a certain point on your XP bar.
