Bisexual pride day and dating

The Bisexual community has faced many travesties over time and the Bisexual pride day helps them get comfortable with their own identities.

Bisexuality, in simple words, is the romantic or sexual attraction towards both males and females. It has also been defined as the romantic or sexual attraction to people that identify as any other sex or gender identity. Bisexuality has been a widely observed phenomenon throughout all human history, however, the naming of this phenomenon, and coinage of the term bisexuality was carried out in the 19th century.

Bisexual dating has been subject to ridicule since the Victorian era, people have been more acceptable to the heteronormative ideals of society since the dawn of man, however, those found guilty of homosexual acts, even those in private, were criminalized and faced harsh penalties. By the turn of the 20th century, there was relatively greater acceptance of the queer identity, but the laws were still in place.

The stonewall rebellion in America sparked an outrage amongst the gay community, which led to a series of protests and demonstrations demanding queer rights. The next step for securing their rights as a community came in the form of a distinct organization: Bi net U.S.A., which was established in 1990. Soon after its establishment, the first-ever National Bisexual Conference in America was held in San Francisco. With a turnout of 450 people from different states, the event was a huge success, and the mayor of San Francisco issued a proclamation "commending the bisexual rights community for its leadership in the cause of social justice", and June 23rd was to be the Bisexual Pride Day.

The celebration of Bisexuality was conceived as a response to the discrimination and ostracism of bisexual people, both in straight, heteronormative communities and in the greater queer circles. Berkeley became the first U.S. state to officially declare a day for the celebration of Bisexual identity. September 23rd was chosen as the Bisexual pride and visibility day. In 2014 BiNet U.S.A. proclaimed seven days around September 23rd to be the Bisexual+ awareness week, the agenda for this week is to fast track the acceptance of the bisexual identity, drawing attention to the shared experiences of the Bisexual community and celebrating the ongoing acts of resilience by the community against prejudice.

Several organizations and individuals help set the stage for the bisexual pride day by organizing film festivals, forums on various pressing issues concerning the community, drag shows, art displays, performance events and parties to help members get to know each other. The bisexual pride day enables and encourages allies and bisexual+ people to spend the day learning about the history, culture, and current policy of its communities. It also provides a sense of belonging and community to bisexuals and helps them fight isolation, it provides their identity with visibility and helps them connect with more bisexual+ people. Over time, the world has drifted ever so slightly of its heteronormative ideals, the laws regarding the criminalization of homosexual acts have been removed from many places around the world but the prejudice still holds.

Today, many people come out as bisexual and feel proud of their identity, often, dating is hard for queer people and therefore, many online portals exist that cater to their dating pool. One such example of this online service is BICUPID. This dating portal has, since its inception in 2003, tried to help people find like-minded individuals. By helping others overcome the stigma of bisexual dating, BICUPID provides a safe space for the queer community to interact and become more acquainted with their self.
