VISION 1789: The Fastest Road Legal Hypercar With a Carbon-Neutral Impact… And It’s Not An Electric Car

London, UK – 23rd October, 2020 – At the dawn of a major turning point for the automotive industry, brought about by ecological, social and economic issues, a certain conformism is in evidence among today’s Hypercar manufacturers. While electric power is the only path taken by car manufacturers, and more particularly sports cars, VISION Automobiles Paris is convinced that a variety of energy sources is the best way to avoid going down the wrong path.

Many energies have their interest in very specific applications, and it is time to shake up the established order and offer new high-performance and responsible alternatives:

”… Each technology has its interest in specific applications, and to limit oneself to one would be a mistake. Just as climbing Everest in sandals, motorizing a Hypercar with the wrong technology (energy) doesn’t make sense. For this reason, VISION Automobile Paris considers that biomethane is today the most suitable and responsible energy to meet the constraints of use on the track…” highlighted Thomas Castex, the President of the company.

VISION Automobiles Paris is therefore committed to providing innovative solutions for tomorrow’s mobility. It is time to realize that players in industries such as the automotive and luxury industries must mobilize their resources to revolutionize their sector and influence it in a virtuous way.

”… VISION 1789 will therefore be the first 100% French Hypercar to be fitted with a biomethane-fuelled engine. Innovative and visionary, this technology will guarantee outstanding performance, a carbon neutral impact and a sound worthy of the prototypes of the Le Mans 24 Hours…” said Florian Gravouille, co-founder and Partner.

VISION 1789 will also be a technological showcase for the capabilities of French industry, and will accelerate the development of biomethane engines for racing, but also, in the long term, for mass-produced vehicles.

The French startup is therefore part of a more responsible dynamic, a pioneer for the segment.

Biomethane is an energy that has already been developed by expert companies and engineers, such as WRTi, which is supporting VISION Automobiles Paris in the development and integration of this technology for 1789.

“Biomethane is one of the most interesting and responsible energies from well to wheel. Widely used today for heavy trucks and utility vehicles, this technology has its rightful place in the development of a racing car”.
 – Thibault Dejardin, Innovation Engineer, Welter Research Technology Industry

Carbon neutral impact thanks to biomethane

VISION 1789 will be equipped with an innovative engine, developed for endurance and running on biomethane.

What is biomethane?

Biomethane (or BioGNV – Bio Gaz Naturel Véhicule) is natural gas used as a fuel and composed of more than 97% methane (CH4). It is produced from the fermentation of organic waste of agricultural, industrial or household origin and has the particularity of being able to operate with the conventional thermal engines we know.

Its impact on our environment:

– Carbon neutral impact: Today, about 20% of global warming is caused by methane generated by agriculture and the extraction of fossil fuels. Methane is a much more powerful greenhouse gas than CO2, with a global warming potential 28 times higher. Capturing and burning this methane as carbon dioxide means reducing its impact on global warming by 9, thus having a neutral or even positive impact on this greenhouse effect.

– A renewable source of energy: In addition to its carbon neutral impact, one of the strong points of biomethane is that it is a renewable source of energy that uses the waste resulting from human activity.

– Comparative advantage compared to diesel: Compared to diesel, the combustion of biomethane in an internal combustion engine results in a reduction of more than 80% of CO2 emissions, more than 95% of fine particle emissions and more than 70% of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Indeed, the CO2 released in the exhaust is equivalent to the CO2 consumed by the methanized plants during the manufacturing process.

Biomethane: key figures

– Proven technology: As a fuel with recognized ecological and economic advantages, NGV, which is extremely close to biomethane (bioNGV), is now used by more than 26 million vehicles worldwide. This dynamic, which is mainly driven by the heavy vehicle market, facilitates the application of biomethane. (Source: Navigant Research)

– 40,000 stations in 2026: 40,000 stations by 2026. According to a new report released by Navigant Research, some 39,000 CNG stations are expected to be operational worldwide by 2026, about 14,000 more than today. (Source: Navigant Research)

– 5 g/CO2 per KM from well to wheel: In total, a vehicle running at 100% BioGNV is as ecologically neutral for the planet as an electric or hydrogen vehicle whose electricity or hydrogen (H2) would be produced from 100% recyclable electricity. Moreover, its compatibility with current thermal engines makes it the energy source that requires the least amount of rare materials such as Cobalt, Lithium, Platinum, etc., which are essential in the manufacture of batteries or fuel cells.

“…The benefits for VISION 1789 are tremendous,” mentioned Martin Chatelier.

”…Space-saving engine and long autonomy: Biomethane technology requires a fuel volume relatively close to conventional thermal engines, which makes it possible to keep the total weight contained, unlike electric and hydrogen engine technologies.

“No major technological breakthrough or loss of jobs or industry in Europe: Biomethane is a rapidly applicable fuel without completely transforming either the vehicle technology or the distribution method.

“Outstanding performance and emotions: In a world where hypercars are increasingly silent, biomethane technology gives VISION 1789 a breathtaking sound, reminiscent of the prototypes of the Le Mans 24 Hours! … one of our core advantages!” Chatelier added.

“Biomethane is a fuel of choice in the context of the energy and climate transition that we are experiencing. This technology is very promising, and it is with pride that VISION Automobile Paris will be the showcase for it…” – Thomas Castex.

It is high time that the players in the Luxury Goods industry mobilized to provide new solutions. This is what VISION 1789 is doing with an innovative, responsible motorization, designed for endurance. We are convinced that in the future, biomethane will occupy an important place in the world’s most prestigious motor races, and hopefully on a larger scale.

“VISION Automobiles Paris is working for the renewal of the automobile but also for the reduction of the use of fossil fuels in the world.” – Thomas Castex, President and Founder, VISION Automobiles Paris

1789 will be equipped with a V8 Bi-Turbo powered by biomethane. The power developed by VISION 1789 will be close to 1000hp for a total weight contained around 1250kg. Still with the aim of minimizing the weight and keeping a “track car” behavior, 1789 will be propelled by its two rear wheels.

A point on safety

A less dangerous fuel than gasoline: biomethane is a gas that is lighter than air, and therefore less dangerous than gasoline. A gas fire is easier to control than a petrol/gasoil fire. Indeed, if the tank is in the middle of a fire, the rise in pressure causes a relief valve to open and the flame is then controlled upwards.

VISION Automobiles Paris is the work of dozens of enthusiasts, driven by the desire to embody a new vision of the modern Hypercar.

Thanks to expert and renowned partners, and a sensitivity to the issues of our time, the French startup is offering a Hypercar never seen before, with a sporty and revolutionary motorization, embedded in a technological and luxurious case, reflecting French know-how.

To be a technological showcase is an immense ambition that animates all Visionaries, in order to influence the automobile industry and motor sports, towards an ecological and social conscience. And this, without ever forgetting the emotions behind the wheel, and in the stands.
