Lockdown Art: Artist Devises Introspective Art Project ‘The #Covid19Diaries’

Neurodiverse artist Mahlia Amatina has announced her newest art project inspired by Covid-19’s lockdown measures, entitled ‘The #Covid19Diaries’. The meditative practise involves taking 19 minutes each day to create a spontaneous line drawing reflective of Mahlia’s mood. This is conducted while listening to relaxing music, with a gong sound that starts and ends the session.

“With so much uncertainty with what’s going on and the consequent anxiety this has created, I wanted to have something concrete in my day to turn to”.

The ‘diaries’ act as a coping mechanism for Mahlia, who was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome in 2015, as well as providing a personal reference point to look back to in the future.

“This meditative project has created a wonderful opportunity to have a committed daily drawing practise – even if it feels at complete odds with what’s going on in the world right now”.

Named among the ‘Top 50 Influential Neurodivergent Women’ by Women Beyond the Box, and well-known for her thought-provoking art, Mahlia has created an accessible and introspective project that she hopes others will be encouraged to take up while experiencing lockdown.
