New online published book "The Facts of Life" offers insightful perspectives about lost opportunities for incarcerated men

Dr John Taglianetti has just released "The Facts of Life," a short book that examines the issue of men serving life sentences in prison. Written by an expert on criminal justice, the book sheds light on the lost opportunities for incarcerated individuals and the reluctance of parole boards to offer second chances.

The book highlights the fact that commutations, which offer a possibility for release from prison, are rare in Pennsylvania and other states. This is due, in part, to the risk-averse nature of parole board members who fear being held accountable for any crimes committed by released prisoners. As a result, parole boards often refuse to consider anything other than the offense itself during hearings.

The author argues that the nation's parole board needs to take a new approach to granting parole to incarcerated individuals, particularly those serving sentences for violent crimes. Research has shown that older people are rarely violent and that extremely long sentences are seldom justified on public safety grounds.

"I wrote this book to draw attention to explore the lost opportunities for incarcerated individuals who are serving life sentences," said the author. "It's important to recognize that the current system is not serving the interests of justice or public safety. By offering second chances to those who have shown remorse and made efforts to better themselves, we can create a more just and equitable society."
