Everything you need to know about QuickBooks passwords

Brandon, MB––April 28, 2022: Malware, phishing attacks and data breaches are the most common threats for small and medium-sized businesses, says a survey from Intuit QuickBooks.

Focusing on the threat of cyberattacks, 42% of businesses surveyed in the US revealed that they’ve experienced a cybersecurity breach. Malware was cited by 18% as the most common type of security threat, followed by phishing among 17% and data breaches among 16%. Website hacking was mentioned by 15%, DDoS attacks by 12% and ransomware by 10%.

Due to the increasing number of cybersecurity threats, QuickBooks takes vigorous measures to protect user’s data. Intuit requires an online password, even to log into the desktop version of QuickBooks, its accounting and bookkeeping software.

Those with a QuickBooks file that includes sensitive information such as payroll or credit cards must also sign in with an online account first. For years desktop users have only needed a username. Even so, many users felt the change seemed heavy-handed, especially when combined with a requirement to change passwords every 90 days.

QuickBooks has a very thorough password retrieval process in place. For years, Intuit has provided a QuickBooks password reset tool. However as knowledge of the tool has grown, so has abuse. In the past, anyone could obtain a QuickBooks Company file, allowing them to retrieve and steal important financial data from the account. By requiring users to enter their Canadian Social Insurance number, QuickBooks has significantly lowered the instances of theft.

E-Tech’s Password Reset Service also assists in resetting the Admin user password within the QuickBooks company data file so the file can be opened as the Admin User.

The QuickBooks Password Recovery Service can be used with all versions of QuickBooks Data files and works with all versions of QuickBooks including QuickBooks for Mac, QuickBooks Enterprise, Pro, and Premier.
