Fans and fashionistas get geeky over the elite bags of San Diego Comic Con.

San Diego CA- As the doors opened for Preview Night at the 2019 San Diego Comic Con, over 130,000 fans will make their way into the convention center that served as the futuristic city in 1993’s Sylvester Stallone flick Demolition Man. Celebrities, comic books, blockbuster films, and women (and men!) dressed as Princess Leia will attend panels, stand in line for autographs, and vie to purchase limited edition “convention exclusives”  unavailable to mere mortals who were not lucky enough to score tickets to the sold out show.

Exclusivity is one of the biggest draws of the event. Being the first to see footage of unreleased films, the first to see new costumes, the first to get a new comic book, and one of the few able to get a limited-edition collectible bestow the lucky with bragging rights and street cred that money can’t buy.

Some exclusives however, are free and simply carrying one imparts an aura of superiority that is hard to match. What are these magical totems? The shopping bags of Comic Con. As millions learned from Pretty Woman, walking while casually carrying the bag of the “in” boutique shows people you are something special.  Warner Brothers is the sponsor of the official bag of Comic Con and they have no fewer than 20 separate designs for 2019. Their bags are ubiquitous and are literally everywhere at the convention. Often popular SDCC bag designs sell for over $100 USD on sites such as eBay. Equally popular are the bags from Mezco Toyz, a company known for their One:12 Collective figures and the infamous Living Dead Dolls. Their giant, electric orange and black bags feature their mascot Gomez, the suave secret agent anthropomorphic cockroach with his own website www.agentgomez.com . Carrying a Mezco Toyz bag signals to other attendees that the bearer is a force to be reckoned with.

Cosplayer Lori Smerecki exclaimed “Everybody who buys a ticket gets the official SDCC bag, but only a handful of people are lucky enough to get a Mezco Toyz bag. It’s a badge of honor. It shows people you made it to booth 3445 and managed to buy an exclusive”.

So great is the cache of the Mezco bag that many multi-day attendees carry the bag with them each day instead of leaving them behind in their hotel rooms.

Mezco Toyz staff wouldn’t comment on how many bags are distributed at the show but the proprietor of a nearby booth shook her head and said “Whoever designed that bag is a genius”.
