Kingston, March 15, 2023: QuickBooks is designed to handle large amounts of data, but ironically all that data can bog the program down and slow performance.
Typical QuickBooks optimization should occur every 6-12 months, to ensure your QuickBooks is running at top performance. The end result is that your business reaps the benefits from a more efficient, high functioning accounting infrastructure.
If a hard disk gets too full, the whole system tends to run slower. A general rule for maintaining hard disk performance is to keep at least 10% of the size of the hard drive free. So, a 2GB hard drive should always have at least 200MB free.
Every list in the program is loaded into memory when QuickBooks starts, which can take a long time, if you have thousands of entries or customers. Files can become corrupted over time as well, which can increase file size and cause delays in starting up. It is recommended to clean files regularly to remove expired or stale entries, and reduce the database file fragments by converting to a portable file then back to a company file. Remember, the more data added into QuickBooks, and left there, the more the program has to open each time it starts up.
Plugins and pop-ups also affect the performance of the QuickBooks Desktop application. It is advised to remove plugins and addons that do not simplify operations. Pop-ups from the Company Preference tab of the company file can be disabled to that effect. Remember to close all other unused applications that are competing for processing power while operating QuickBooks Desktop.
Changes to the application, operating system or network settings can also hamper QuickBooks operations. Although the QuickBooks Diagnostic Tool is able to automatically diagnose and repair problems, there could be certain aspects that could require manual intervention.
Too many DB File Fragments can be a cause for slowing down QuickBooks and reducing them should be a priority task for QuickBooks users. Do bear in mind the best practices like taking regular backup of transaction log (.TLG) files, clearing print queues, avoiding zero line transactions, minimizing multi-user mode use, regular workstation reboots, list item reduction, and reports optimization.
