Filmmaker Phoenix Quwais: Black Actors Have A Chip On Their Shoulder!

As I reflect on years gone by, I can't remember a time when I've ever been subjected to any vivid racism. I can't recollect an occasion when my skin tone has prevented me from attaining something I was desirous of. I've always managed to obtain even at the expense of men of other races. To that effect, I’ve always been able to woo any woman I desired regardless of how Aryan her bloodline may be. So, when I see the likes of the uber talented Viola Davis get up on stage and declare that there's a lack of diversity and a lack of opportunity for black actors, it reinforces my heartfelt belief that my fellow comrades in thespianism, have an obvious chip on their shoulder.

It is my esteemed opinion that opportunity or lack thereof, for black actors has nothing to do with race and everything to do with money and marketability. I believe that if you can make the studios or the production companies money, they don't give a proverbial fuck whether you're black or Jupitarian, because to them, butts on seats equals box office success, which in turn equals money in their pockets. The name of the game is MONEY!!! If you can't make them money, you are afforded next to no opportunity, but this is rarely if ever due to race these days. It's due to money! What I always advise my fellow black actors is to do what Matt Damon and Ben Affleck did with "Good Will Hunting"; do what Sylvester Stallone did with Rocky. In other words, create your own opportunities. There are far too many people trying to make it in this business and a great many are surplus to requirements and a vast number are simply privileged wannabes.

The warmth in my loins for anything Kristen Stewart, led me to watch a television interview once where Kristen Stewart, when discussing Viola Davis' comments, said: "Write something or create something"; and I echo her sentiment toward the so-called plight of black actors in Hollywood. Don't just bitch and moan about no opportunity... create it!!! And if there is (I've never felt it) any racism or barriers towards my success as a man of color in this business, then I live by legendary boxer Jack Johnson's opinion of: "The only way to deal with prejudice, is to deal with people as though prejudice does not exist". If people see me as less, then they need to know that I don't consider them my equals nor do I see an equal among them to begin with. To quote Author Stanley Crouch: “American virtuosity is based on making something difficult look easy. That has always been the black man’s greatest skill.”

The racism of black people is usually a response to other people's racism towards us, whereas the racism of others is de facto based upon stereotypes and ignorance. Barack Obama's presidency put the White House within our reach as a people. In a country where we were routinely lynched due to our racial delineation, we can now rise to the apex of American society. We now stand shoulder to shoulder with our Caucasian counterparts as sovereign citizens in the greatest country God ever conceived. There is nothing that a black person cannot achieve in 21st century America. Absolutely nothing! No summit we cannot scale to, no waters we cannot traverse. We've reached the pinnacle and now the only way to elevate ourselves to higher echelons of apotheosis, would be to overthrow God himself and sit in his stead. In this 21st century, a black person can lead the prayer in Mecca, a black person can marry into the British royal family, and a black person can sit in the oval office as commander and chief of the United States of America! It does not get any bigger or any more prestigious than the White House. So regardless of what excuses my fellow black thespians make, there is no color barrier and no prejudice to hold us back. Not now. Not ever. The war that MLK and Malcom X and others fought, has been WON! No more excuses!!!
